Finasteride

Finasteride is a prescription medication commonly used to address male pattern hair loss by reducing production of dihydrotestosterone, or DHT—a hormone that can contribute to progressive hair follicle miniaturization in genetically susceptible men. Treatment may be considered for patients interested in preserving existing hair and supporting longer-term hair density.

* Prescription treatments require medical intake and approval by a licensed healthcare provider. Treatment is not guaranteed, and results vary by patient. Some medications may be compounded or used off-label when determined appropriate by a provider. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved, and the FDA does not review them for safety, effectiveness, or quality.

The science behind

Finasteride

Finasteride is a 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor. It reduces conversion of testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), an androgen that plays an important role in androgenetic alopecia, commonly called male pattern hair loss. In genetically susceptible hair follicles, DHT contributes to progressive follicle miniaturization, resulting in shorter growth cycles and increasingly thinner hair.

FDA-approved 1 mg oral finasteride is indicated for male pattern hair loss in men. Continued treatment is generally required to maintain its effect, and benefit may take several months to become noticeable. FDA-approved finasteride for hair loss is not indicated for women.

How It Works

Finasteride inhibits the enzyme 5-alpha-reductase, reducing the amount of testosterone converted into DHT. Lower scalp and circulating DHT levels can decrease androgen-related signaling within susceptible hair follicles.

In simpler terms, finasteride helps reduce one of the hormonal signals responsible for gradually shrinking certain scalp hair follicles. The goal is usually to help slow continued hair loss and preserve existing hair, with some patients also experiencing improvement in hair density over time.

Finasteride does not create entirely new hair follicles, and individual response varies. Hair-loss pattern, genetics, age, duration of hair loss, other medical conditions, nutritional status, and additional therapies can all influence results.

Our Commitment to Safe, Transparent Care

At Powered by Peptides, we believe hair-loss care should begin with understanding why hair loss is occurring rather than automatically prescribing the same product to everyone.

FDA-approved oral finasteride is available for male pattern hair loss. Other hair-loss patterns may have very different causes and may require additional evaluation before treatment is considered.

Women who are pregnant or may become pregnant should not use finasteride, and FDA labeling warns against handling crushed or broken finasteride tablets because of potential fetal risk. Particular caution is also required with topical formulations because medication may potentially be transferred through skin contact.

If a compounded formulation is prescribed, it may be fulfilled by an independent licensed U.S. pharmacy. Powered by Peptides does not compound, dispense, store, relabel, or ship prescription medications. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved and are not reviewed by FDA for safety, effectiveness, or quality before marketing.
