Testosterone for Women

Testosterone is not exclusively a male hormone.  It is a normal and important part of female physiology. Women naturally produce testosterone throughout life, where it participates in sexual function, reproductive physiology, bone and muscle biology, and other androgen-dependent pathways. When clinically appropriate, carefully dosed testosterone therapy may be considered as part of women’s hormone care.

The science behind

Testosterone for Women

Testosterone is a naturally occurring sex hormone in women, just as estrogen is naturally present in men. Female testosterone is produced through the ovaries, adrenal glands, and conversion of other hormones within body tissues. It interacts with androgen receptors throughout the body and can also be converted into estradiol or dihydrotestosterone. Testosterone therefore has a legitimate role in normal female physiology and should not be thought of simply as a “male hormone.”

The strongest evidence for testosterone therapy in women is for appropriately evaluated postmenopausal women with hypoactive sexual desire disorder, or HSDD. Current international consensus guidance does not support routinely prescribing testosterone for energy, mood, cognition, muscle gain, weight loss, or general anti-aging because evidence for those uses remains insufficient. There is currently no FDA-approved testosterone product specifically indicated for women in the United States, making treatment generally off-label when prescribed for female patients.

How It Works

Testosterone interacts with androgen receptors in tissues throughout the female body and contributes to normal hormone signaling. In women, androgen physiology is connected with sexual desire, arousal, reproductive function, and numerous cellular processes. Testosterone also serves as a precursor that can be converted into other biologically active hormones within individual tissues.

The goal of testosterone therapy for women is not to create male-level testosterone concentrations or masculine characteristics. When therapy is appropriate, dosing is intended to remain within a physiologic female range and is dramatically different from testosterone exposure intended to produce male hormone levels.

This distinction matters. Clinical evidence evaluating physiologic testosterone treatment in postmenopausal women found that treatment may produce mild increases in acne or facial/body hair in some women, but was not associated with voice deepening or clitoral enlargement at physiologic female concentrations. Excessive or supraphysiologic testosterone exposure can increase the risk of androgenic effects, which is why appropriate dosing and monitoring are important.

Testosterone for Women

Active Ingredient: Testosterone

Delivery Method: May include topical or transdermal formulations or another provider-selected formulation when medically appropriate.

Directions: Take only as prescribed by your provider.

Treatment Length: Protocol length may vary based on provider review, treatment goals, and individual response.

Monitoring: Medical intake and laboratory review are recommended. Monitoring may include total testosterone, SHBG, symptoms, clinical response, and signs of excessive androgen exposure. Additional laboratory testing may be recommended based on the patient’s overall hormone-health plan.

Important Note: Testosterone levels alone do not determine whether treatment is appropriate. Symptoms, menopause status, medications, health history, other potential causes of symptoms, treatment goals, and provider assessment should all be considered. Results vary by patient and are not guaranteed.

Our Commitment to Safe, Transparent Care

At Powered by Peptides, we believe women should understand the role testosterone actually plays in female health. Testosterone is a normal component of female physiology, not a hormone that belongs only to men. At the same time, having testosterone in the body does not mean every woman experiencing fatigue, low libido, mood changes, or menopausal symptoms needs testosterone therapy.

When testosterone is prescribed for a woman, the objective is physiologic female hormone support, not masculinization. Dosing and monitoring are important because excessive testosterone exposure can cause androgenic effects.

There is currently no FDA-approved testosterone product specifically indicated for women in the United States. Female testosterone treatment is therefore generally prescribed off-label. FDA is actively examining the evidence and research gaps surrounding testosterone use in menopausal women, including sexual function, cognition, mood, musculoskeletal health, and long-term cardiovascular and breast safety.

If a compounded formulation is prescribed, it may be fulfilled by an independent licensed U.S. pharmacy. Powered by Peptides does not compound, dispense, store, relabel, or ship prescription medications. Compounded medications are not FDA-approved and are not reviewed by FDA for safety, effectiveness, or quality before marketing.
